Best Birth Control Measures For Teenagers To Enjoy Sex

Birth Control For Teens
Recent studies have revealed a disturbing trend: teenagers are having more and more sex at younger and younger ages. According to one recent study of Baltimore teens, almost 42% of urban teenagers have had sex before their 15th birthday and 26% before their 14th birthday. Whether or not these numbers are generally applicable or peculiar to the metropolitan Baltimore area is beside the point. Teenagers are having sex and need access to condoms and safe contraceptives.
Many people are of the position that teenagers shouldn't be having sex and thus don't need birth control. Giving them access to contraceptives, they say, would merely encourage them. I disagree. I believe the reality of the situation is that teenagers will have sex whether they have access to birth control or not. With that in mind, it makes sense for us to simply accept reality and do what we can to mitigate the consequences of teenage sexual behavior.
Many doctors require a note from a parent before they will prescribe birth control. Others, such as those at free clinics or county health departments, will prescribe birth control to teens of a certain age provided they can afford to pay for it. If you are or know a sexually active teen, the local county health department is your best friend. You should make an appointment with a doctor to discuss your actions discreetly and without your parents knowledge, if you so wish. At the very least, county health departments often give out free or deeply-discounted condoms to those who ask. Condoms are an especially effective form of birth control because they also help protect against the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
Whatever your position on the topic of teenage sex, it is up to all of us to ensure they are well-educated on the nature of sex, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. Denying this from them amounts to nothing more than an assault on their rights as an individual.
